For jacketed bullets, I've had very good luck with the Hornady line, specifically the 300 and 350gr in 45/70. H4198 makes a mighty fine load with those bullets.

Gater, I had the same question, when I started looking around at a newer model of Marlin to use for "heavy" loads in the 45/70. I have an 1881 (S/N 1xxx) that I shoot, but it's only with government loads. Can't shoot the "heavy" stuff out of that old gun! I looked at a 45Colt 189...
