You're right - the front sight on the 38-55 is back farther - I hadn't noticed that before. Although there aren't any file or saw marks on the muzzle, so I'm guessing it must have been done quite a while ago.

Measured it - closed the bolt, put in a cleaning rod, marked it, and measured the rod. 24-1/2 inches. I think the 1/2 mag tube just makes the barrel look longer.

I keep forgetting to measure it

Another question - will a model 36 mainspring fit an 1893? The mainspring in mine appears to be a homemade replacement, and I like the trigger pull a little further south of 15 pounds.

What exactly is the difference between an 1893 and an 1893 Lightweight? Barrel length? Mag tube length? Also, anybody know if replacement butt stocks are available? The one of the rifle only has a couple smalls cracks running from the butt, but sometime during the past 113 years (it's first year man...
