Re: Marlin Model 39 Manufacture date
The model 39 was introduced in 1922, and did not carry a prefix. The S prefix likely was first used in the 1925-26 era, based on serial number ranges for the non and S prefixed rifles. The HS prefix was used beginning in 1932, until the introduction of the model 39A in 1939. Use only standard or tar...

Re: 1894 Octagon
have you removed the buttstock to see if it is serial numbered to the receiver? when you mention extra grade wood, potentially it was an original 1976 manufactured rifle with round barrel that someone added after market wood and a spare Marlin octagon barrel (NOS) bought from Numrich? sounds like a ...

Re: Marlin Model 47 - research project
1Q2014 update (many additions since last update!): The current known range of serial numbers is 230 - 5101 (only 2 verified with 3 digit serial numbers) Less than 10% of the rifles reported have the Rocky Mountain adjustable rear sight, with no obvious link to production timing. This appears to have...

Re: lucky marlin purchases
Gary, your 45/70 was made in 1976 (letter prefixes to the serial number ended 1968-69) The "new" system utilized a formula of 100 - first 2 digits (24) = 76 => 1976. The encircled JM is the factory proofmark to denote the barrel withstood proper testing. JM are the intials for John Marlin,...

Re: 336 S.C. 30-30 value?

Re: Marlin 39 serial number
With the leading digit after the S prefix an "8", it places your rifle in the 1928-1929 timeframe for manufacture in my opinion. Thanks, the pictures really helped!

Re: old model 39
I've done some more research on the cartridge stop in my reference library. Brophy mentions nothing about the stop in the model 39, but within the chronology of the 39A he says it went from stamped metal (I believe as you described), to solid powdered metal (my '64 parts catalog pictures it as a sma...
