1889 v. 1893 38-40 Cal.

I have a 38-40 Cal. Lever Action Ser. #83xxx., Manufacture date 1893. What model no. is my rifle? 1889? 1893? or possibly an early model 1894? It is my understanding that the 38-40 was manufactured from 1889 through 1894, with the 38-55 starting in 1895 - is this correct? If so, is there any way to ...

My rifle has a aluminum fabricated Crescent butt plate, in place of original. Very crude piece, includes tang - so I know stock has not been shortened. Currently the rifle has an aluminum plate (fabricated) - which is plain butt ugly.
