New to Dating rifles

Post by Blynch »

I have searched and have read and still do not understand. I have an old Marlin fire-arms rifle 45.70 that was passed on to me. it has 4 digit number of 2945 on the bottom side. why cant i find any information on it. the only thing that comes up is "made before 1883" is that correct?

It sounds like you likely have a Model 1881 Marlin, and with the low serial number it isn't in the factory records. Marlin didn't record numbers until around #4000, so rifles built before that are 1881-1882 era. Yours being high enough to guess it's likely an 1882 mfg. date.
Marlin lever actions 1870's-WWI, Ballards, and single shot rifles!
