With a 4 digit serial number (and no prefix) as you have written, it's likely from the third or fourth year of production (1924-5). The ivory bead was standard until 1934. The rubber buttplate should have the Marlin name in vertical script. Shoot ONLY standard velocity ammo in this rifle or you will break the bolt! Great find, do enjoy!

Same question
The s# on mine is 3212

I learned to shoot with this gun. It was my great grandfathers handed down.

Your Model 39 would have the same butt plate as mentioned in the other post. If yours is broken or missing, a replacement is available from www.gungrip.com The item number is B345.
These are okay replacements, but the new plastic looks too shiny to my tastes, so I paint them black with a high quality paint made for plastic, then when dry, buff them lightly with fine steel wool to dull them down for the proper look.
Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!

Thank you for the reply

But I was referring to the birth date question more. I have referenced information and have a relative date of 1928 to 29 but I am not sure.

Since your Model 39 does not have either the "S" or "HS" serial number prefix, it would have been made sometime between 1921 and 1925.
With the serial number in the 3,200 range, then most likely early in the second year or late in the first year.
Sorry about mistaking your request, I saw the remark made about the butt plate in the other reply, and thought that was what you were inquiring about.

The "S" prefix was used from 1925 to 1932. Again, now with a serial range of 3,200, it should be late first year (1925) or early 2nd year, 1926.

You are correct on both dates.
