1893 restore

Post by wwmartin »

About a year ago I picked up a 1893 rifle that someone had started to restore. All the parts were polished and blued and they did a nice job , the letters weren't washed out and the edges weren't polished over. The depth and color of the blue are more Python than Marlin. My thought were as MM93 suggested to have the butt plate ,lever, hammer, trigger and end cap case colored and leave the receiver blue. It has what appears is a NOS Smokeless barrel in 32-40. My question is what was it when it left Marlin the first time Ser.#173609. Any thoughts on the blued receiver, it's kind of growing on me.
Thank you for any information you can offer. Bill

Bill;

Your Marlin Model 1893 left the factory late 1898 as a .30-30 caliber gun with a 26 inch octagon barrel.
As far as the blued receiver, a blued receiver could be special ordered at the same price as a case-colored receiver according to the 1897 catalog.
Since it will no longer be an original gun, it is yours to do with as you like.
Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!

Thank you for the information on what it was shipped as. I'm still undecided about the blue but I'll probably leave it as is for now any way.
