Looking for date information for Model 93 with an odd serial

Post by Gorf »

Greetings all, I was doing a lot of reading on this site and on Google. I'm confused on what I have read and found so I thought I would ask here. I have a Model 93 that is a octagonal barrel, "Special Smokeless Steel" on the barrel, but no star on the tang as best I can see (maybe I am looking in the wrong place?). The serial is odd to in that it starts with a letter. It is A2927. This Link won't accept the "A" but then tells me the numeric portion of the serial is "before 1883".

Any thoughts? Happy to post close up images if needed.

Gorf;

Two questions, you say it is a Model '93, or is it a Model 1893. It makes a difference. Where is the serial number located? Up near the forearm or under the lever? Makes a difference.
Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!

The growing federal deficit = generational slavery to the national debt.

Here are photos for reference. They link to the higher res version if needed. It's marked "Marlin Model 93" and the serial number is under the lever.

Gorf;

The Model '93 marking did not some into use until after 1921. There were some guns made at that time that did not have a letter prefix, so the letter prefix "A" may have started in the first year, or maybe the next or 1922. There are no records for this era, so we have to do some estimating from what serial numbers have been recorded over the years by dedicated collectors.

Very interesting! I think it's time to gently clean this old boy up. It's in reasonable condition but could use a little TLC.
