1881

Post by Brianmp »

I have a marlin 1881 in 40-60
It has a pistol grip and shotgun buttplate, no checkering but not an scratch on it
It is 1/2 round and 1/2 octagon barrel 24 inches long with a 1/2 Mag slightly longer than normal
What puzzles me is what looks like a flat rib like a shotgun rib
Is this a rare combination?

Brianmp;

This does not sound like a factory item. There have been instances where full octagon barrels have been turned down to half octagon by a gunsmith and from your description, that may be the case.
The serial number would help to identify if this is a true half octagon barrel or not. Pictures of the oddity would also be of assistance.
Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!

Brianmp;

Information on serial number 26247 shows that this Model 1881 was shipped in mid-1890 with a 28 inch octagon barrel in .40-60 caliber.
Yes, you can send pictures directly and gave you my direct email address by private messages.
