Picked up a neat one
Picked up a 1st year production 336A with "E" prefix 1948 serial number in the early 900 range. It has the 336 roundbolt receiver and obviousely a parts clean up barrel marked 36 A DL. The reciever is not drilled and tapped on the side for a side mount receiver sight such as my 1950 is. Has the waffle top on the reciever that I like and different style rounded sight hood, where my 1950 was square shaped. For you collectors, any idea how many rifles went out with mismatched barrel to reciever? Thanks, Ryan

Literally thousands! It wasn't actually a mismatch, as Marlin regularly sent out standard 336 Marlins with the barrels marked 336A-DL. I've lost track of how many I've seen with that marking. Wouldn't have been a "clean up run" in the first year of production. They would have simply used them up the next year, if that was what they were doing.
Marlin lever actions 1870's-WWI, Ballards, and single shot rifles!

As Marlinman93 stated, Marlin used up parts on hand in transition years. That is the case with your 336 with a 36 barrel. Some years back I had one. It was a first year production "E" with a serial number in the 800's. This was not unusual to see in transition years. I don't understand your reference to the "sqaure shaped" hood on your 1950 Model 336. It should have a ramp type front sight and the old "keyhole" shaped front sight which slides onto the ramp.
The first of the Model 336's were made in June of 1948.
