Skinner Sights, help me decide.

For the past week I have been trying to decide which Skinner Peep sights to go with for a Marlin 336 44 magnum. Skinner offers them in Blued Steel or Brass.

This Marlin has a brass trigger and saddle ring so I am tempted to go with the brass ones. If the rifle didn't have those brass parts my decision would be easy, I would go with the blued sights.

I am going to use this rifle, it's not a safe queen. I am wondering if the brass will reflect light into my eyes. Last evening I looked at the Skinner sight page for an hour and could not make up my mind. I was almost ready to flip a coin.

Which would look better and/or be more practical?

I had a Skinner sight on my 450 with a lever scout mount in front of it and use leupold quick release rings so I can pull the scope if fog rolls in or the scope should get banged. I think this set up is one of the best. I could use the peep and get on an animal that is moving, or the scope with the long eye relief, and my eyes are not the best. Traded off the 450 GG after I bought the new 450 Stainless. Will use the Brass Skinner on it and have a new Lever Scout mount that will go on it shortly. Randy


As you can see the Scout Scope mount uses the front two scope mount holes and the rear sight dovetail. Without the scope on, mine was on Leupold quick release rings for fog and or banging the scope while hunting and no chance to re-sight it, you can look right over the mount using the Skinner sight. I sold this rifle when I bought a stainless 450 and plan on using the brass Skinner I have on it and putting another Scout Scope Moun t on it.

I was tempted to go with one of those scope mounts but decided that I don't want to scope this 44mag. I am planning on using it for close coyote hunting at camp. The shots will be well under a 100 yards where I hunt them so a scope on a 44mag isn't really needed, but I do like that mount.

I am still looking for opinions on brass or blued Skinner sights. I'm ordering one or the other on Monday. Right now I am leaning toward the blued ones. But still tempted by the brass ones. Or flip a coin.

Hugger, I see you're in a fix, with the bling bling already on the rifle and an urge to compliment it! I could see where you would consider the brass, on the other hand I don't know if the brass would reflect just a flash of light at the worst possible time, alerting you're quarry to your presence! Personally I would go blue. I'm seriously considering Williams receiver fptk sights for the 30TK i picked up not long ago seen here:
