1893 marling 25-20

Post by zfunk88 »

I recently acquired 1893 lever action marlin 25-20. It was purchase by my wifes grandfather. It has a 26 1/2 inch octagon barrel. Serial number is 266495
I know very little about guns was wondering how old it is and approximate worth.

Sounds like you've either got the caliber, or model wrong. If it's a .25-20, then it should be a model 1894. If by chance it's a model 1893, then it's most likely a .25-36 Marlin, not a .25-20. They didn't make the model 1893 in .25-20.
Values vary so much that it's nearly impossible to determine even a "ballpark" value on any old gun without knowing everything about it. Too many special order features, and condition to consider in determining values. Close examination is the only sure fire way to know. Great pictures can get a ballpark estimate, but nothing more.
Marlin lever actions 1870's-WWI, Ballards, and single shot rifles!

Zfunk88;

The records show that serial number to be a Model 1894 that was shipped in early 1903. It HAD a 28 inch octagon barrel in .25-20 claiber and pistol grip stock. The pistol grip stock adds to the value, but apparently, the shortened barrel will take it away.
Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!

I am no expert but are you meausuring the barrel length from the end of the reciever out or from the inside of the chamber where the cartridge goes? Will make a differance obviously but I do not know if it would make a 1 1/2 inch differnace but maybe....
