Need Help: How to attach rear sight to Model 80 (1939)

Post by dosborne5 »

Recently, I was given a Model 80 that was made in 1939. I am in the process of refurbishing it. I took it out for a test fire the other day. It shot sweet. Unfortunately, it has no rear sight. I ordered a rear sight that is what Numrich gun parts had to offer for this model. It is a spring and elevator rear sight. I have seen some pictures of this type of sight on model 80's, but I do not understand how the sight would be attached to the barrel. There is a small rectangular block forged into the barrel in front of the receiver. Perhaps, the sight would be attached to it, but I need some help understanding how to attach the rear sight to this block. The sight appears to have two fingers that can be bent out, they would pinch the block on the barrel... I am confused... any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

It sounds like you have a slot blank in the dovetail on the reciever. You should be able to remove this by drifting it out with a brass drift pin from left to right as viewed from the shooting position. The new sight should slide into the dovetail from right to left. Post pics if you can.

Pictures help when you are trying to figure out what you have...sometimes a description just ain't enough ;)

Mals seems to be spot on for this though...sounds like a slot blank block. :)
It's worse than that...he's dead, Jim. You grab his tricorder, I'll get his wallet.
