Trying to determine the exact age of my grandfathers Marlin bolt action 22. It still shoots great! He died in 1929. Any help would be appreciated.

The Marlin Model 81 DL was made from 1946 to 1964. But, there are several variations or changes made during the production that can help narrow down when your grandfather's gun was made. It would be best for you to post a picture of it so we can see it help give you a better idea as to when it was made.
Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!

Here we go. By the way, the correct model no. which I'm sure you already know is 81-dl-22 cal-s-l-lr-a
This gun has a peep sight and from everything I can learn it is post WWII.

You have an early version, that was made to about 1957. The stock was changed in 1957 to a Bishop style stock, and yours does not have that style stock.
So, it was made sometime between 1946 and 1957. That is about as close as we can get at this time, I hope this helps.
