My wife bought me an "Original Marlin Goose gun Model 55" Was wondering if anyone could help me decode the serial number I am curious about the date of manufacture. gun is in good shape needs a little TLC though. even came withthe magazine it is chambered in 3in mag the ser# is 23681985 would appreciate any help.

There really is no decoding to Marlin's serial numbering system. Subtract the first two digits from 100 to determine the year it was manufactured. In this case, 100 - 23 = 77 or 1977.

I'm confused could you help clarify please. I have a model 55 Goose Gun and the serial # begins with 03 meaning it was made in 97? According to the info I read they stopped making the 55 Goose Gun back in 88? Any info would be helpfull, thanks.

The Model 55 Goose Gun was made up to 1996, then Marlin brought our the Model 55GDL which was like the Goose Gun but with a black synthetic stock. And, it is possible that some of the first long barrel shotguns made in 1997 were regular Goose Guns using some left over parts.
