New 1895 LE .45-70

Post by daville »

Just received my 1895 LE that I ordered in February. I don't know to rejoice or cry. The wood is nicely figured and the B checkering is done nicely but the fit to the action is poor. The engraving and gold inlets are great. Bluing is good but the barrel and action are two different polished finishes. The Octagon barrel looks like a fifth grader polished it. The edges are so rounded it looks like they went against the flats instead of with the flats. I suppose I should be happy to have gotten one of the 1500 that are going to be produced but I think I will send it back to Marlin with hopes the have seen their error and replace the barrel.

Daville;

Definitely send it back with a note of explanation. This is not good as the Association just placed an order for 30 of them for members. I may have to give a heads up to our liaison with the Marlin Company so he can warn them of the problems you mention to insure that they are checked before shipping.
You say the wood is "B" checkered, it is supposed to have the "G" grade of style on the flat "S" style pistol grip stock.

I was wrong when I said B checkering. You are correct. The comb of the stock is not as I remember it. It is thick and ends abrupt. I can not post pics on this sight, but if you give me another e-mail and I will forward my pics and text with Remington-Marlin

Click the "Contact" icon in the upper right hand corner of my identification space. It will bring up either PM, email or another icon. Click on the email icon and it will start up your email program so you can send the pictures through your email system.
Marlin has already been made aware of your situation. If you send the pictures to me, I can forward them to the right person at Marlin.

Remington not long ago made an 1895 with a 18" (cant remember the name) barrel just like Marlins Limited III. It too had rounded edges on the octagon barrel along with a laser engraved type roll stamp. Big turn off for me. I fear this is what they consider to be correct? I wouldn't be surprised if your order has rounded edges on the octagon barrels. I hope im wrong. Good luck.

Well the answer from Remington-Marlin is "standard production finish". I have offered to leave them replace it with a Cowboy octagon barrel that has a nicer finish then my polished barrel but haven't gotten an answer. There is always hope but I have a feeling what I got is what I get.
