Reloading for .40-82

Post by daville »

Ok I bought a set of Redding dies for a .40-82. Slugged the barrel and found I should use a .412 lead bullet. I spent a week forming brass from .45-90 brass. Cut to a 2.400 length. Turned the brass neck area down so I could load a .412 bullet and have release clearance. Loaded 25 grains of recommended powder, Hogdon said a max of 29 grains. 25 grains shoots very well for a 118 year rifle but seems slow at 1450 fps. My question is this; does any one know what the original smokeless powder charge was and what was the velocity? Anyone have a pet load might also be helpful. Oh it is an original 1895 manufactured in 1898. Beautiful bore, 85 percent blue and about 50 percent color case. If I own it I shoot it. Thanks for any and all info

About 1800 fps my load. Do not know the specs on the black powder load or the factory load
