Need help with a Marlin Lever action
I was willed some old rifles from a uncle who passed. I was trying to date it because I know its old because its different from any Marlin I have. It is marked on the barrell origional golden39 a. I know it shoots 22 long but what is s.l. ? I am drawing a blank. Where can I go to date it to see when it was made around . THe number starts with 1727xxx8. ANy help would be great ....

Your Marlin Model 39-A with the serial number given was made in 1983.
It is a .22 caliber rifle that can shoot the .22 Short (S) .22 Long (L) and .22 Long Rifle (LR) interchangably. (.22 S L & LR on the barrel)
1983 was the last year for the Model 39-A as it became the Model 39-AS after that.
