Cleaning and Re-Oiling an Oil-Finished Stock

Post by jackman »

I have two early 1950 Marlins with oil finished stocks. Both are in perfect shape, but darkened with age to the point that the real beauty of the wood can't be fully seen. I would like to clean them up and possibly add some additional oil to them. I have heard that the clean up is accomplished with lemon oil.

1. Is that correct?
2. Will lemon oil affect the metal finish and do I need to take the stock and forearm off to do it?
3. Should I be reapplying tongue and/or lindseed oil to the cleaned wood?

Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

See the reply at MO. shum8 is the go-to guy about the finish as he duplicates and finishes gunstocks. Shoot him a PM for the best information. I have used BLO on old guns and am happy with the results - however, it is very time-consuming. Four to six weeks on an old Italian Vetterli musket for me. SW

I have to agree I have seen the photos of Shum8's work and it is extremely well done.
