Need to see some images of your gun. The serial number doesn't sound right to me? Is there any letter prefix to this number? Hopefully you can post pictures, or possibly send them to me via a message or email and maybe I can help?

None of those links work. Tried to view them separately, and open them but got some image of a letter about "adventure camp"??? Weird.

Got them, sent a reply. Need a picture or complete description of the barrel rollstamp markings. It appears to have been refitted with a modern 39A barrel and mag tube.

Not positive on the buttstock, but forearm is off something else, or made from scratch. The barrel appears to maybe be off one of the Winchester bolt action single shot .22's like the 66 or 67A? If so likely 40's or 50's vintage.

i did some reseach on it the winchester 68 .22 came out in the 30s and stoped makeing them in 1944 the sell counited throw 60 somthing. only about 100,000 was made. so the barrle is pretty much unknown the head grip i would agree i think it was hand made or it was taking off of the same gun the barrle came for just fitted to it. so do you think the gun was a good buy i paid 125 for it from a gun guy. thanks you was great help im not going to sell it im going to hang on to it maybe fix it up a little more give it to my kids when the get the right age.

If it functions, and cycles well, and is fairly accurate, you sure didn't get hurt at the $125 price. Not much in the way of .22 rifles you can buy for that money.royburgin13 wrote: ↑Sat Jun 10, 2023 11:14 am i did some reseach on it the winchester 68 .22 came out in the 30s and stoped makeing them in 1944 the sell counited throw 60 somthing. only about 100,000 was made. so the barrle is pretty much unknown the head grip i would agree i think it was hand made or it was taking off of the same gun the barrle came for just fitted to it. so do you think the gun was a good buy i paid 125 for it from a gun guy. thanks you was great help im not going to sell it im going to hang on to it maybe fix it up a little more give it to my kids when the get the right age.
Be very careful about what ammo you shoot in these early Marlin lever .22's! The breech bolt design didn't get beefed up for modern high speed .22 ammo until around 1930, so only standard velocity, or target velocity ammo should be fired in this rifle. Anything hotter can and will eventually crack the breech bolt.

ok thank you ok i have one more question mine has a bolt that has this little tin thing that is on top of the resever right under where it says marlin safety in side where the bullet chambers it helps guide the bullet in the chamber. why when i see other marlin safety from the same year they do not have that same design?

There were two variations to the Model 1897/97 and the first had a round top receiver and no cartridge guide. The 2nd flat top receiver versions all had a cartridge guide like yours, and will have a screw down through the top that retains the guide.
