Photos For haroldpo

Post by Road King »

Haroldpo requested that post some photos of his engraved Model 39 for comments.

My opinion of this rifle's engraving and stock craving is that is one that was done after WWII in Japan by out of work Japanese Master Engravers. I have seen many of these period engraved rifles and have had a few and still have one or two that were brought back by GIs in the 50s that were station in Japan after the war. The style of engraving on this rifle looks similar to one that I have attributed to Hiro or Shiro Ogawa, he was one of the very few that did barrel engraving on his guns. The engraved rifles from this period are often to referred to as Cigarette Guns as the engravers often worked for cartons of cigarettes. This is just my opinion.

The rifle is very nicely done, both metal engraving and stock carving.

I have just noticed that the serial number has the perfix of AC which would make it 1967 production. This would be late for the occupied Japan era. I had thought it was C prefix at first.

Yes, I noticed the AC prefix when he posted images elsewhere, and my thoughts were it might still be Japan, or somewhere in Germany or Belgium. I don't think there's any reason to believe it's factory. But it is very elaborate engraving, and carving!
