Old Marlin Model 28 Pump Shotgun

Post by mec9900 »

I just purchased this old Hammerless Marlin Shotgun. I think it is a Model 28 12 Gauge with a 30 inch barrel. It has a number of Patent numbers from May 12, 1896 thru Dec. 21, 1909. It has a serial number on the bottom of the receiver, 4464. The only markings on the barrel is "12Ga". I have not taken it apart to look for any other markings. Can someone tell me the date of manufacture. It is in good condition for it's age. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Mec9900;

The Marlin Model 28, hammerless pump action shotgun was Marlin's first hammerless shotgun. It was made from 1913 to 1923. It was made in 4 different grades, the "A" grade or standard version, the "B" grade with checkered wood and matted, ribbed barrel. The "C" grade with factory engraving and fancy checkered walnut stocks, and the :D: grade with better engraving and checkered Circassian Walnut stocks.
There was also a Trap grade and a Trap Special grade.
Your gun with the serial number in the 4400 range was probably made in the second year of production.
Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!
