documentation of gun ownership
Could Marlin provide information on a specific gun? Possibly a cross reference of the serial number to determine the date of original sale or purchaser?

It depends on when it was made. There are early records then some were lost. So we can give you an aproximate date of manufacture based on serial number for the lost records, the factory records will have shipping date and configuration ie barrel length possible barrel style but that is about it.
GBOT, GBUSA
The gun is a model 90 16 gauge. It was given to Lefty Grove ( the baseball pitcher ) when he retired from baseball as a gift from his teammates. He retired, I think, in 1941. The gun is at a relatives house at the time so I cannot get the Serial number right now. Is there any way I could locate the details outside of Marlin like through a state firearm registry?

Marlin rarely kept track of who a gun was specifically sold to. There are extremely rare occasions when a gun was made for someone famous, but that's pretty rare.
If it was mine, I'd go to the baseball hall of fame and see if I could get a list of his team mates at the time, and then try to contact each of them (at least the living one's!) to see if any of them can documentthe event, and write a letter to give provenance to the gun. Might not get any serial numbers, but that's probably all you can do.

Marlin lever actions 1870's-WWI, Ballards, and single shot rifles!
