Spinnersstubby;

Your Marlin Model 1889 was shipped in early 1892 with a 24 inch round barrel in .38-40 caliber. It will be marked 38W on top of the barrel, just in front of the receiver.
There were just over 55,000 of the Model 1889's made in rifle, carbine and musket styles. Of those, 18,641 are listed in the records in .38-40 caliber. There are 8,848 listed in the records as having round barrels. Over 39,000 had 24 inch barrels, which was the standard barrel length.
I hope this helps.

Value is dependant on originality and condition. If you can put a couple pictures up it would help to asses both. You can host them on photobucket.com or one of the other free photo hosting sites and use the to post. Many things can and do get changed, sights, wood, reblue, all of which effect value.
