model 336SC butt plate

I picked up a 336SC 30-30 that is missing the original butt plate. It is not for my collection it is for using. It is in great shape and was cheap because of the butt plate. Does anyone have one with spacers for sale or can tell me where to look? I was hoping to locate one faster than waiting for it...

I am a beginner too but I think RC stands for regular carbine and the D means it was mfg. in 1947. Wait to see if someone with more experience here confirms this or agrees.

The serial number list in the blue book just says it is for older rifles and starts with 1883 #4001. I bet it isn't for Ballards. My book is on the way along with the Marlin Firearms book. I am anxious for them to arrive! I was wondering whether to seriously pursue this Ballard as a "starter gu...

Regnier, Yes that does help. The Marlin Catalog I have is a 1913 (repro from Abbybooks). It shows drawings of all the old calibers of bullets and says whether they are loaded with smokeless or black powder. Just as you say there are only those two with black powder. A lot of things are starting to f...

Marlin 1894 SRC

I found an ad for this model in a .44-.40 Win caliber. I can't find SRC in my blue book and haven't had a chance to call yet. Does anyone know if this is the early model 1894 or not? They are asking $895.00. I will try to find out more later this evening.
Thanks,
Sherrill

Marlinman93, Thanks for getting back to me. There is a serial number list in the back of the blue book that puts 16561 to be about 1887 mfg date. Does this sound right to you? I kind of like this one. If you get a chance to look at it would you tell me if you think it would be a good Ballard for me ...

Wow!!!! Thanks for all the info. Regnier...that was a great explanation of what went on with all the left over parts. I see what you mean, that they would put the gun together well even if using a mixture of parts. I am not experienced enough to see very much but I am getting better. Now that you me...

Marlinman93, Thanks for your advice. I had company and was gone most of day yesterday so was not able to post. I contacted the seller and he says the bore is "excellent with sharp rifling". He also dates the rifle between 1876 and 1891. The serial number on the gun is 16561; do you know wh...

Marlin Magazine Article

FYI.....
Just picked up the November Guns & Ammo because I noticed Marlin mentioned on the cover. Turns out there is an article inside about the Marlin Model 39 and it's history. I just got in and have not read it yet but it looks like it is going to be a nice write up with pics.

Thanks to you both. I will get that book also. I have a lot of reading to do. I am really enjoying this forum....I'm having trouble getting other things done! I started out hooked on the model 39A and as I learned more about it's history it led me to the earlier models (1891,1893,etc.). Next I disco...

Ballard #3 Gallery Rifle

There is a new listing for this gun on Auction Arms #8276375. I don't know anything about Ballards but I noticed that some of you are collectors and very knowledgable. If you want to take a look and give some feedback I would like to start learning. Maybe I'll be somewhere some day and need to know ...

Sorry about the worms, but this is just a little confusing. I guess what I am trying to get at is whether or not to steer clear of these guns or if I would be missing out on a good thing...assuming it was in fact all original parts. I can see why back then they tried to use up parts on hand. I suppo...
