Marlin 1881

Post by Buffalo 4065 »

Hello, I just joined this forum and was wondering how to find the history of a 1881 Marlin rifle that I have. The caliber is a 40-60 and the serial number is 1221. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you Bob

Buffalo 4065;

Unfortunately, your serial number is too low for the existing records that actually begin about 4096. Marlin's .40-60 caliber was the same as the "W" brands .40-65 cartridge. The difference being that Marlin used a heavier bullet with less powder.
Your rifle would have been made in the first year of production of 1881 most likely. Standard barrel length for the Model 1881 was 28 inches and was octagon in shape. Otherwise, there is not much more information available for your particular rifle.
Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!
