I have a lever action 30-30..
serial number G 40714
I see these numbers under the lever.
Im thinking (and have been been told) this was made before the 1900's
This as I know is a 4 generation gun..
can anyone confirm this?

Re: Marlin rifle 336a..
The 336 was introduced after WWII - 1948 to be exact. Serial numbers began with the prefix "E" and were alphabetized
in following years,i.e., F = 1949, G = 1950 - when your gun was made - and so on. The letter "I" was not used, nor was "O."
As the years progressed, the numbering system changed, but the preceding holds for the earlier guns.
