A friend died and gave me a Marlin 39a 22.
The number under the lever has 3446.
Breaking apart, one side had a 46 marked on it.
I had trouble finding any other numbers or markings.
Does anyone have any help they can offer?
I saw in some information that shooting current loads or high power loads can possibly damage older models.
Can anyone give advice on this?
I would appreciate any help related to this gun and correct loads I can safely shoot with it.
The barrel says it can shoot S,L, & LR

Re: Marlin 39a
If your rifle is actually marked "39A" on it then all 39A's are fine with any modern ammo. It's the pre 39A Model 39's and other models before the Hi Speed bolts that can break the breech bolts if hi speed ammo is used.
Your serial number should have a letter prefix if it's a 39A, and the number you posted leads me to think it might not be a 39A, but instead maybe a Model 39? Please post all the markings on the barrel, and also on the top tang. Also if there's a tang sight remove it to see if there is a rollstamp there also.
