No model number found

I purchased on old Marlin .22 about 40 years ago and
just recently took a look at it. It has no model number engraved
nor any patent numbers.
It appears to be very similar to the model 39, and has serial # S13XXX.
It has a fold down peep sight on the tang, and is is very good condition.
Could this be a forerunner to the 39? Any way to find manufacture date?
